Introduction:
The Department of Botany organized an Industrial visit to Kameshwar Oil Industries, Burhanpur, on February 6, 2025, for students of B.Sc 2nd year. The major objective of this visit was to provide students with practical knowledge of industrial processes related to plantbased products and oil extraction. This visit was attended by 22 students accompanied by
faculty members, to explore the industrial applications of the subject in oil extraction and waste management.
Objectives of the Visit:
- To understand the oil extraction process.
- To study the method of extracting oil from cotton seeds.
- To learn about the utilization of industrial waste (recycling).
- To gain practical insights into Plant-based industries.
Details of the Industrial Visit:
Upon arrival at Kameshwar Oil Industries, the student group was warmly welcomed by Mr. Ankush Shah and Mr. Manan Shah, the key officials of the industry. They provided
students with a detailed explanation of the Oil extraction process and demonstrated the following key aspects:
Oil Extraction Process from Cotton Seeds:
- The process begins with cleaning and removing the outer shell (husk) of
cotton seeds using specialized machinery. - If the seeds contain moisture, they are first dried using sun exposure and then further dried using a drier machine to ensure proper oil extraction.
- The dried seeds are then crushed using oil extraction machines
- This process yields ‘Saraki oil,’ which is used as edible oil.
- The extracted oil is only single time refined crude oil.
- The crude oil is then transported to Gujrat for further refining and processing.
Production of Animal Feed (Cotton seed oil cake/Khalli):
- After extracting oil, the remaining solid residue is known as khalli (Oil cake).
- This khalli is rich in nutrients and is widely used as animal feed.
Recycling of Waste Material (Gad):
- During oil extraction, solid waste material called gad is produced, which has good cleaning properties.
- This gad is repurposed for soap manufacturing, ensuring minimal industrial waste
and promoting sustainable practices.
Key Learnings from the Visit:
- Through this visit, students gained valuable industrial exposure and practical insights, including:
- A thorough understanding of the oil extraction process from raw seeds.
- The importance of waste management and how by-products can be effectively reused.
- Knowledge about the economic significance and the role of botanical studies in the development of plant-based industries.
- Awareness of sustainable production methods and their impact on the environment.
Student Feedback:
The students found the industrial visit extremely informative and beneficial. They appreciated the opportunity to witness the oil extraction process firsthand, enhancing their technical knowledge and practical understanding of botanical applications in the industry.
Conclusion:
This industrial visit to Kameshwar Oil Industries provided students with practical exposure to the workings of plant-based industries which was a part of their syllabus. It helped them to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world applications. The
Department of Botany aims to continue organizing such visits in the future to provide students with valuable industry experience and hands-on learning opportunities.
