Launch of Organic Farm Pilot Project
The Botany Department at SGJ Quaderia College, Burhanpur, is embarking on an exciting initiative to develop an organic farm, with active participation from students. This farm will focus on growing plants using natural methods, without synthetic chemicals, to promote
healthier crops and environmental sustainability. By engaging students in this project, the college aims to foster practical knowledge, skill development, and environmental awareness through hands-on experiences in organic farming.
Importance of Organic Farming
Organic farming plays a critical role in preserving soil fertility, enhancing biodiversity, and reducing the need for harmful pesticides. It not only promotes ecological balance but also contributes to healthier food production. This initiative provides a valuable opportunity for students to learn and apply sustainable agricultural practices, preparing them for future careers in an increasingly eco-conscious world.
Objectives of the Organic Farm Development
1. Economic Involvement and Benefits: The farm will implement cost-effective organic farming methods, which will support the college’s broader goal of sustainability. In addition to yielding fresh, healthy produce, the project will offer economic benefits through the potential sale of organic crops and the learning opportunities it provides to students.
2. Enhancing Student Coordination: By involving students in every step of the process, from seed planting to harvesting, this project aims to improve collaboration and teamwork. Shared responsibilities will foster better coordination in group tasks, helping students develop valuable communication and leadership skills.
3. Skill Development: Students will gain hands-on experience in key agricultural skills, such as organic farming techniques, soil management, and crop care. These skills will not only enhance their understanding of sustainable agriculture but also equip them with competencies that are in high demand in the growing field of green technologies and eco-friendly farming.
4. Hands-on Training: This project provides an ideal platform for students to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world farming scenarios. By participating in hands-on training, students will bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical experience, gaining a deeper understanding of organic farming practices.
5. Farming Experience: Students will have the opportunity to participate in the entire process of organic farming—from seed sowing to harvesting. This comprehensive experience will give them practical insights into sustainable farming practices, preparing them for future roles in agriculture, research, and eco-friendly industries.
Faculty and Team Involved
- Head of Department: Prof. Shaakira Ansari
- Collateral Faculty: Miss Sakshi Jadhav
- Support Team: Shree Lakshman Jadhav and the Botanical Garden Caretakers
- Student Observers: Each student is assigned to monitor the growth ofspecific plants, focusing initially on fenugreek (methi) and mustard (rai).
Current Work in Progress
The organic farm is currently cultivating fenugreek and mustard, with high-quality seeds sourced to ensure optimal growth. Students are actively involved in monitoring plant development, applying organic techniques, and maintaining soil health.
- Fenugreek (Methi) – Trigonella foenum
- Mustard (Rai) – Brassica juncea
Students are gaining valuable experience by observing and documenting the entire growth process, from germination to maturity.
Expansion Plans
In addition to fenugreek and mustard, we are expanding the organic farm to include:
- Vegetables: Okra, Brinjal, Radish, Spinach, Coriander, Chili
- Spices: Cumin seeds
- Gourds: Sponge gourd, Bitter gourd
- Special Project: A small mushroom cultivation farm is under development to diversify the farming activities.
This expansion will provide students with exposure to a variety of crops and farming techniques, further enriching their learning experience.
By implementing this organic farm initiative, SGJ Qaderia College not only contributes to sustainable agriculture but also enhances the educational experience for students. This project offers a holistic approach to learning, blending economic benefits, environmentalstewardship, and academic growth. The hands-on experience gained through this initiative will equip students with valuable skills and a deeper understanding of the importance of sustainability in agriculture
